The Art Of Stocking Suspension
Why did the wearing of stockings nearly die out in the 1970s? I’m sure it had something to do with the flimsy garter belts of that era which really weren’t up to the job. Our garter belts combine glamour with practicality and are designed to hold your stockings up comfortably all day.
Unlike modern belts, our garter belts are designed to be worn high on the waist, just like in the 1950s. It’s essential to wear your belt on your waist, as your hips will prevent it sliding down. If you’re new to wearing stockings then I recommend our Maitresse Garter Belt which is designed for daily wear.
4 or 6 Straps?
Our garter belts all feature metal garter clips, a little wider than modern styles, and adusters that really grip so you don’t find your stockings sliding down. Although in the 1950s garter belts had 4 straps, 6 strap belts have become popular in recent years: of which we have a wide range. Having said that, women wore nylons on a daily basis in the 1940s and 1950s and managed quite nicely with 4 strap belts. In my opinion it’s the cut of the belt and the quality of the clips that make the most difference.
